Members of the COGS funded Nelson Multi-Ethnic Council gather to help migrants in the area adjust to life in New Zealand, while educating New Zealanders about cultures from around the world.

‘Celebrating diversity by providing practical support to newcomers and raising public awareness through positive race relations opportunities.’

The vision of the Nelson Multi-Ethnic Council is ‘Celebrating diversity by providing practical support to newcomers and raising public awareness through positive race relations opportunities.’

The funding we received from COGS has gone towards paying overheads and wages of our co-ordinator who works on supporting migrants in the Nelson/Tasman region.

Some of the projects that the NMEC has worked on over the past year are; Week of prayer for world peace, a multi cultural festival, maintaining a list of interpreters that can be accessed by the community, assisting government and local government agencies to consult with the ethnic groups in our region, commemorating Waitangi Day and organising monthly social functions, just to list a few.

A huge thanks to COGS for their financial support.

Our thanks to COGS for providing this article.
