H.M.N.Z.S. Wellington.

The Sink F69 Charitable Trust was formed with the intention of purchasing and sinking an out of commission Navy frigate, the H.M.N.Z.S Wellington. The purpose of which is to create an artificial reef off the coast of Island Bay.

The trust recently received a grant of $15,000 from the Pacific Development and Conservation Trust to aid in the costs associated with the sinking of the frigate.

This funding was used for environmental education programmes associated with the project.

Research has found that by establishing an artificial reef large communities of diverse marine organisms are attracted to the area. An ecosystem is then created that can support many recreational and commercial marine species.

It is expected that due to the frigates close proximity to the city, the site will become a world-class divers destination. With this added attraction tourists are likely to spend more time in Wellington, benefiting local business.
