The deteriorating state of the wharf.

The Tolaga Bay Wharf Charitable Trust was recently awarded $20,000 in grants from the Pacific Development and Conservation Trust to aid in the restoration of the Tolaga Bay wharf.

The historic wharf is located in Gisborne. At 660m long it is said to be the longest wharf in the southern hemisphere, making it a once popular tourist attraction.

The deteriorating state of the wharf was noticed several years ago when the support piles began to collapse. Concrete reinforcing began to crumble due to a poor choice in initial construction materials. This prompted conservation reports and furious fundraising efforts.

A spokesperson for the Trust commented “…the committee has started serious fund raising to show the strength of the local commitment to saving this popular icon which has appeared on Tourism Board posters, lotto advertising and in thousands of photo albums.”

The funding received from the Pacific Development and Conservation Trust is a much needed contribution. The battle to restore this iconic piece of history to its former glory will continue to wage until the wharfs longevity is assured.
